I was making a housecall to one of my prepaid remote and onsite computer support clients in Mililani setting up a new computer. It was an HP Envy Desktop with 8 gig of ram. His old computer was showing signs of going out so I suggested a new computer and use the old computer as a backup in case the new computer temporarily broke down.

It didn’t have a VGA input! A VGA cord looks like this (Amazon link with a picture). It’s been the standard for connecting your computer monitor to your computer probably since I’ve been into computers which is 1993. What port was used to connect the monitor to the desktop computer? An HDMI port. This is what an HDMI port looks like It has the ability to carry both audio and video and used quite often to connect a computer to an HDTV.

So I had to send my prepaid remote and onsite computer support client for a new monitor telling him to make sure it had an HDMI port. He came back with a very reasonable costing 27 inch Acer Computer Monitor WITH built in speakers that made me jealous! Before my computer client went to the store to buy a new monitor I instructed him to purchase a six foot HDMI cable as well. Having vast experience setting up printers and knowing how much printer companies love to save money by not supplying a USB cable for the printer, I was 99% sure the monitor wouldn’t contain an HDMI cable in the box. Sure enough, the monitor box contained a useless VGA cable and no HDMI cable. So if you decide to support my efforts by ordering the Acer monitor with the Amazon link I provided, make sure you order a six foot HDMI cable. Much longer and, per my experience, the signal may not make from the desktop to the monitor.

Transferred Files

I transferred my client’s files with a flash drive and had him keep the flash drive for a backup. I also had a data transfer cable at the ready so I could transfer quickly from one computer to another directly if I weren’t backing up the old computer while setting up the new computer.

I just finished giving an in home cell phone lesson to a senior citizen lady in Honolulu Hawaii. Very nice lady. About 50% of my in home computer, cell phone and tablet tutoring clients are senior citizen women. I give in home lessons in Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu, but I hear the same problems all the time when nephews, daughters or grandkids try to teach parents or grandparents how to use their new computers, tablets or cell phones.

He just gets so frustrated
She makes me so nervous
He shows me 10 things to do then tells me to try it
I’m so afraid I’ll push the wrong thing

He Just Gets So Frustrated

You have to make it fun for grandma and whether you want to smile or not SMILE! Think back to how patient she was when she was showing you how to tie your shoelaces. Did she ever say,

“Everyone knows that”

No she didn’t and don’t you either.

She Makes Me So Nervous

I hear this a lot as well. I always tell my in home computer, cell phone and tablet tutoring clients things like this,

“I’m glad you pushed that while I was here so I can show you what it does and how to get out of it.”
“You didn’t make a mistake you gave me an opportunity to show you something new.”

Your grandma’s afraid of her new computer. She’s afraid she’ll push the wrong thing. You shouting,

“NO NOT THAT ONE!”

doesn’t help. Remember to smile. Remember who taught you to tie your shoelaces regardless of how many times you forgot. Did grandma show you that just once? Devices are more complicated than tying shoes, but it takes the same amount of patience and understanding.

He Shows Me 10 Things To Do Then Tells Me to Try It!

Step by step folks and grandma sits at the computer, cell phone or tablet not you. I probably have my hands on my in home computer, cell phone or tablet client’s device about 10% at the most of our lesson time. Start with the basics and ASSUME NOTHING.

I’m So Afraid I’ll Push The Wrong Thing

As long as that’s grandma’s attitude she’ll never enjoy her new device. My standard joke with my in home clients is that I want to get fired because they’re so confident in trying new things that they only call me when there’s a problem with the device or to setup a printer. You have the same job. Use positive reinforcement.

“”See that? You did that all by yourself. Great job!”

No matter how many times it takes grandma to get it right you be positive and compliment her on her progress. Also don’t let her see you look at your watch, don’t check your messages or Facebook account. Give her ALL your attention.

The Truth?

I think relatives are the worst people in the world to teach someone a new skill. Regardless of how good of a teacher some people say I am, I’d hire a tutor for my son if he needed help in school. Why don’t you just save yourself some frustration and your parents or grandparents some frustration as well and just hire me.

As an in home computer tutor and virus and spyware removal specialist here in Honolulu Hawaii covering all of Oahu, 25% of the calls is people who forget their passwords. I’ve had to hack into Windows and Apple/Mac computers because people have forgotten their login passwords, which takes me 15 minutes or less by the way.

Most of my in home computer clients write their passwords down in a notebook. This often gets too convoluted or even lost. I remember one computer business client who had his/her passwords so messed up I spent two hours straightening that out and didn’t have time to give him/her his/her computer business lessons to learn how to make money online.

Some people are a little more techie and keep their passwords in a file in their computer. A slightly better idea since you can use the search feature built into the computer to find the file with your passwords. There are, however, problems with this method of saving passwords. As an in home computer repair expert, I can tell you it’s not IF your computer will crash, it’s WHEN your computer will crash. Most people don’t have their computer files and photos backed up. I can visualize even now the pleading look in the eyes of my computer clients who want me to recover photos of their grandchildren and important work files for their businesses. I can usually save the photos and files, but it would be easier with a proper back up.

Some computer users depend on their internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Edge or Google Chrome to remember their passwords. Of the three internet browsers I just mentioned Chrome does the best job of this since you can sync your settings by using your Google, which is also your Gmail, account. This takes care of the problem with the computer crashing. You still need to know your Gmail address and password, but you can reestablish the other passwords by installing Chrome on the new computer and logging in to your Google account. I just recently did this for an in home computer client in Ewa Beach after she utilized a unique service I offer in which I shop for the computer myself, bring it to my client and set it up.

I still don’t like depending on one place to store passwords though. So here’s your computer tip to never lose your passwords.

You need two online email addresses from two different companies. A Gmail and Yahoo account for example.

Copy all your passwords in an email including the passwords for the email accounts.

Make a subject line that’s easily searchable.

Send the email to both email addresses.

Make a special folder in each email account for emails you wish to keep.

Move your email to your special folder in both of your email accounts.

DO NOT give your email account passwords to anyone.

Many of these poor techs are in the modern equivalent of sweatshops. They have a certain number of computers they have to repair in a limited time. Turn around rate is terrible so you won’t find someone with experience. Stop and think about why it’s cheap before risking your computer investment and identity at a discount electronic store.

When you find a local computer expert ask for references. If they claim privacy issues keep looking. Folks, I cannot emphasize the important difference between knowing how to use a computer and knowing how to teach someone, in a relaxed, positive environment, how to use a computer in a safe, fun manner.

For maintenance and security computer checks make sure the computer IT is a virus and spyware removal specialist. I have”competitors” who claim to remove computer viruses and just wipe your computer’s hard drive. You then spend hours or even days reinstalling software you purchased (provided you kept the product key), photos and work files (provided you backed them up properly). This is because the computer viruses and spyware are using resources you need to run programs, applications and surf the internet. Ram stands for random access memory. The less free ram you have the more programs and videos have to wait for memory to be freed up to run the programs and videos. A home page is the first website that appears when you first click your internet browser. An internet browser is what you use to surf the internet. Examples of internet browsers include Internet Explorer signified by the little e on your computer, The Edge also a little e for Windows 10 users, Google Chrome, Firefox, and for Apple/Mac users Safari.

Home pages can change for a variety of financial reasons for the hackers. The hackers could have PPC pay per click advertising on the web page which has suddenly become your home page. The hackers could have been motivated by PPI pay per install. Pay per install involves the prechecked additional software that is installed on your computer if you don’t uncheck the prechecked option. In my field of computer virus and spyware removal, we call this piggyback software and consider it unethical. Even legit companies such as Adobe offer a MacAfee virus checker as a prechecked option. When asking my in home computer clients how they got an application on their computer none of them have known.

Often this is combined with a change to your home page. The Ask.com, formally Ask Jeeves, search engine is notorious for this. Now let me be clear, Ask.com is not a computer virus, the sudden presence of Ask.com as your home page and or search engine IS a symptom of a computer virus. There are computer virus search engines such as Babylon. Caution is advised since there are also legitimate products called Babylon as well. The motivation of hackers is similar to what’s already been mentioned, PPI or in the case of a search engine virus, the ability to track, record your data including user names and passwords and steal your identity.

Toolbars are the often useful “bars” on top of your internet browser that often have things such as search boxes, auction sites and bookmarks or favorites depending on your web browser. Some toolbars can track where you go on the internet. They also take up bandwidth which is one of the factors controlling the speed of your internet. The more toolbars you have the slower your load time for web pages. Some toolbars may have computer viruses and spyware built into them which you may unknowingly click and use on a regular basis.

Naturally the motivation for hackers behind this is having links on the toolbars for which the hacker gets paid when you click upon them. If a toolbar isn’t something you asked for it should be removed not only for a safety precaution, but to speed up your ability to surf the internet, check email etc..

Popups used to be a popular way to advertise on websites. So many website owners and advertisers took it to the extreme that popup software began being written and finally popup blocking is turned on by default with every web browser (same thing as internet browser).

Hackers, through various means from piggyback software to you just visiting the wrong webpage and getting malware installed on your computer so that you even get popups on your desktop. Advertising also appears on websites that doesn’t belong to the website owners. No one else sees these extra ads, but you and anyone else infected with the same computer virus. Hackers make money when you click on these advertisements. Almost all hacking is now financially motivated.

I saw ransomeware evolve from an easily removed computer virus through safemode to a complex piece of unwanted software which protected itself by disabling safemode as well as antivirus software. Ransomeware is the computer viruses you may have been infected with or heard of which locks you out of your own desktop, claiming to be the FBI or Homeland Security or some other well known government agency, stating you have copyrighted material or child adult material on your computer. The lock leaves a link open to a service called Moneypak stating you must pay a fine to get your computer unlocked. To be clear, Moneypak is a legitimate company.

This fine of course, is a scam. A computer virus removal client told me the FBI was getting lots of calls. I got calls from some people that paid the money, nothing changed of course. They still had the virus and were still locked out of their computers.

Hacking is Now Part of Organized Crime

When the FBI ransomeware computer virus first came out, according to Znet News, an organized crime ring in Russia was busted by Russian police, 90% of the ransomeware computer viruses stopped being delivered. This crime rings front was accepting credit card payments online.

My point to the above statement is this, these computer viruses, spyware and malicious software (malware) are now written by professionals. With this in mind DO NOT risk your identity or computer by having your nephew, who knows a little more about computers than you do, try to remove all of the computer viruses and spyware that end up infecting your computer once a security breach is discovered by a hacker’s bot. Often, regular computer repair technicians (ITs) primary solution is to just wipe your hard drive, thus making you a victim twice since you lose all your pictures and work files and purchased software when a computer is reset to manufacturer settings.

Instead contact a computer virus removal specialist. See your specialist every four months so he/she can catch bad things coming into your computer before the small bad things become catastrophic events.

How Do I Control My ADHD

Now there are medications to help control our impulses, but as a child we didn’t even know what ADHD was. I ended up in a lot of sports as a child and that seemed to help. Then I got into martial arts. I’d like to thank all my martial arts instructors especially Sensei Dennis Zitser (it’s been decades so forgive any misspellings) who, as a trained school teacher as well as a great martial arts instructor, put up with my antics and interruptions and taught me the value of discipline and martial arts.
